Uruguay and DEA sign new cooperation deal

The Government of Uruguay represented by Interior Minister Nicolás Martinelli and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) signed a “memorandum of cooperation” in Washington DC Wednesday whereby the South American country will receive help fighting trafficking. Joining Martinelli's entourage was Anti-drug Brigade Director Alfredo Rodríguez.

Dengue kills over 1,000 people in Brazil so far this year

Dengue fever has killed over 1,000 Brazilians so far this year while other 1,531 deaths are under investigation, federal authorities admitted Wednesday. The Health Ministry's Arbovirus Panel said 1,020 deaths from the disease have been recorded whereas the total number of casualties from the same ailment in 2023 amounted to 1,079. The country has recorded some 2.6 million infections, Agencia Brasil also reported.

General Richardson kicks off Buenos Aires agenda

US Southern Command (Southcom) Chief General Laura Richardson held a meeting in Buenos Aires with Cabinet Chief Nicolás Posse and Ministers Diana Mondino (Foreign Affairs) and Luis Petri (Defense) as well as with Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Armed Forces Head General Xavier Isaac to discuss “military cooperation” between both countries, with a focus on China's presence in the region. In addition, Argentine purchases of defense equipment were also reviewed. Also participating in the talks was US Ambassador Marc Stanley.

Paraguay not unwilling to pay Waterway toll, FM says

Paraguayan Foreign Ministry Rubén Ramírez Lescano told Congress Wednesday in Asunción that the government of President Santiago Peña was not against barges sailing through the Paraná Waterway paying toll provided there was a service in return.

Brazilian industry slides for second straight month

According to the Monthly Industrial Survey released Wednesday by Brazil's Rio de Janeiro-based Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), industrial production in South America's largest country fell 0.3% in February, which represented its second straight monthly decline after January's -1.5%, Agencia Brasil reported.

Oldest man on earth dies aged 114

Venezuelan national Juan Vicente Pérez Mora passed away Tuesday due to respiratory complications at the age of 114 in San José de Bolívar, Francisco de Miranda municipality, in the state of Táchira. He was certified by the Guinness World Record on Feb. 4, 2022, as the oldest man on earth. He had been born in El Cobre, Táchira State, on May 27, 1909.

Milei pledges to obtain a roadmap for the return of Malvinas during his mandate

On the 42nd anniversary of the start of the Falklands/Malvinas war, President Javier Milei pledged that during his term in office “we will have a roadmap so that the Malvinas Islands return to Argentine hands,” underlining that the South Atlantic Islands sovereignty claim is an includible mandate for all Argentines, but for this we need “a country with a vigorous and prosperous economy” and that respects its armed forces.

General Laura Richardson arrives in BA for talks with Milei's gov't

General Laura Richardson, chief of the US Southern Command (Southcom) arrived Tuesday in Buenos Aires for a 3-day visit to Argentina during which she intends to engage in talks with local military and defense authorities to discuss geopolitical issues of mutual interest. According to local media, an encounter with President Javier Milei was not to be ruled out.

Haitian authorities fend off yet another attack against Gov't Palace

Five Haitian law enforcement officers were wounded while fending off an onslaught from Jimmy “Barbecue” Cherizier's Vivre Ensemble (Living Together) gang against the Government Palace in Port-au-Prince on Monday. According to local media, there were various casualties on the attackers' side, but the number remained undetermined.
