First batch of Israeli hostages released in exchange for Palestinian prison inmates

The terrorist organization Hamas Friday handed over 13 hostages of the over 200 taken from Israel in the Oct. 7 attacks. The measure was enacted during a four-day ceasefire which also allowed for the release in return of 39 Palestinians who were serving prison sentences. Further swaps are expected in the coming days.

Central Bank of Paraguay lowers interest rates

The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) lowered its benchmark interest rate from 8.50 to 7.25%, for a cumulative reduction of 1.25 basis points so far this year, in response to an encouraging macroeconomic scenario and positive international economic indicators. The decision was made after a meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) late Wednesday, it was reported in Asunción.

Ecuador's new president sworn in

Daniel Noboa, aged 35, was sworn in Thursday as Ecuador's new president during a ceremony at Quito's Legislative Palace. He will be at the helm of this country for 18 months to complete the term of office left unfinished by Guillermo Lasso, who activated the so-called “crossed-death” mechanism to avoid impeachment and called for snap elections.
