    Bangladesh files formal request to join BRICS

    The note was filed after a meeting between Hasina and Ramaphosa in Geneva

    According to the Dhaka Tribune, the government of Bangladesh last week filed a note applying for membership to the BRICS bloc made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The application from Bangladesh, currently recognized as a “Friend of BRICS,” is expected to be discussed at the group's summit in South Africa in August.

    Honduras wants to join BRICS bank

    During her six-day visit to China, Honduran President Xiomara Castro formally asked BRICS' New Development Bank (NBD) Chairwoman Dilma Rousseff for the Central American country to join the entity, it was reported in Shanghai. A technical delegation of the Honduran government will travel in the coming days to initiate the process.

    Former Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff has been elected Friday to head the New Development Bank (NDB), also known as the BRICS Bank to replace Marcos Troyjo, who had held the post since July 2020. Rousseff will remain at the helm of the Shanghai-based financial institution until the end of Brazil's mandate in July 2025. Each BRICS country (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) chairs the bank for rotating five-year terms. She will take office later next week during President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva's visit.

    Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero Monday thanked his new Chinese colleague Qin Gang during a telephone conversation for the Asian Giant's support for the South American country's claim over the Malvinas/Falkland Islands. Qin Gang had become China's new Foreign Minister on Dec. 30, 2022. Both top diplomats concurred that a peaceful solution was needed for the South Atlantic dispute.
