    FACh triggers alert over unidentified aircraft neat Strait of Magellan

    When the F-5s reached the area there were no signs of the intruding aircraft

    Chile's Air Force (FACh) deployed two F-5 fighter jets from the Chabunco air base in Punta Arenas after unidentified traffic was detected Tuesday at around 7 pm local time in the vicinity. Some Chilean outlets said the alleged intruder stemmed from Argentina but Defense Minister Maya Fernández never admitted (nor denied) the possibility.

    Chile in mourning after murder of 3 Carabineros officers

    Boric decreed three days of national mourning and pledged to capture those responsible

    Three non-commissioned officers of Chile's Carabineros Police were killed early Saturday in an ambush in the town of Cañete, near the city of Concepción, in the Bío Bío region some 500 kilometers south of Santiago. The crime, which is still under investigation, shocked the entire country. President Gabriel Boric Font promised it would not go unpunished and other officials even called for the reinstatement of the death penalty.

    Chile's Interior Minister Carolina Tohá held a meeting Friday with the Speakers of both Houses of Congress to discuss concrete measures in the aftermath of the slain of three police officers. Senate Speaker Juan Antonio Coloma spoke of “a powerful effort by all” ahead as agreements between the Executive and the Legislature are to be reached. In addition to Lower House Speaker Vlado Mirosevic, the meeting was also attended by Justice Minister Luis Cordero.

    Chile's Interior Minister Carolina Tohá admitted the country's previous constitutional reform attempt was a failure and said she was aware that her country could not afford to let that happen again while underlining the importance of citizen participation.

    After Rejection prevailed in Sunday's referendum to approve a proposed new Constitution, Chile's President Gabriel Boric Font was forced to reshuffle his cabinet in a move to regain some credibility after less than 40% of voters supported him.
