    Boluarte needs to exercise “presidential diplomacy” abroad

    Peru's one-house Congress passed a bill whereby President Dina Boluarte will be able to leave the country and continue to exercise the presidency remotely, it was reported in Lima Thursday. Boluarte was the only South American leader to miss out on Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's Summit last month.

    Former Peruvian Prime Minister Betssy Chávez was arrested Tuesday in connection with the Dec. 7 coup d'état staged by then-President Pedro Castillo Terrones, it was reported. Peru's National Police (PNP) arrested Chávez at her home in the southern city of Tacna after the Supreme Court ordered her pre-trial detention for 18 months.

    Lula's Summit to gather 11 South American leaders in Brasilia

    President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's “retreat” Summit scheduled for May 30 will gather 11 South American leaders, it was confirmed Friday in Brasilia. The presidents of Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Paraguay, Suriname, Uruguay, and Venezuela have confirmed their presence. The only absence will be that of Peruvian President Dina Boluarte, who has internal legal impediments, it was reported. Instead, Prime Minister Alberto Otárola will be attending.

    Peru: Boluarte undergoes cabinet reshuffle

    Peruvian President Dina Boluarte Sunday took the oath of office from four new ministers. Particularly striking was the appointment of Daniel Maurate to replace José Tello on the same day that former President Alejandro Toledo was brought in from the United States to stand trial for influence peddling and money laundering in a spinoff of the Odebrecht scandal. Tello had dubbed Toledo a “criminal.”

    Peru: Motion to impeach Boluarte fails to get through Congress

    Boluarte said the motion to impeach was an “obscure political maneuver”

    Peru's one-house Congress Tuesday dismissed a motion to impeach President Dina Boluarte for “moral incapacity” by 64 votes to 37, and 10 abstentions. A reconsideration mooted immediately afterward was also rejected by 67 votes to 34 and, again, 10 abstentions. In view of these results, Congress Speaker José Williams ordered the case shelved.
