    Finland's UPM will construct a second 2.1 million ton pulp mill in Uruguay

    The mill investment is expected to total US$ 2,7 billion and is expected to begin production in 2022

    Finland's UPM on Tuesday made the investment decision to construct a 2,1 million ton eucalyptus pulp mill near Paso de los Toros in central Uruguay.

    Finnish company sets out conditions for the building of a second pulp mill in Uruguay

    UPM will carry out an engineering study and permitting process for a pulp mill with an annual capacity of about 2 million tons of eucalyptus market pulp.

    Finland's UPM and the Government of Uruguay have signed an investment agreement, which outlines the local prerequisites for a potential pulp mill investment. The agreement details the roles, commitments and time-line for both parties as well as the relevant items to be agreed prior to the final investment decision, reported the Finnish company in a release on Tuesday.

    Uruguayan president Tabare Vazquez, six cabinet ministers and a numerous business delegation begin on Monday a two weeks official tour of Germany, Finland and Russia to increase political and trade links, particularly in the “new international scenario” and hopefully advancing in locking the long delayed accord between the European Union and Mercosur.

    Uruguayan pulp mill passes pollution tests - Gualeguaychú not quite

    Controversial pulp mill not as polluted as Argentine side of the river

    An Argentine-Uruguayan commission took 50 samples of effluent from the pulp mill off Fray Bentos and as many in the Gualeguaychú mouth of the river in Entre Rios. Botnia passes test. The reports from the samples collected on the Argetine side recorded more polluting than those found off Fray Bentos. The plant's formal name is “Orion” but is widely known for its original Finnish name Botnia.

    Ex-Anglo abattoir complex in Fray Bentos joins Unesco's World Heritage List

    Liebig Extract of Meat Co. exported meat extract and corned-beef to Europe from 1865 and the Anglo Meat Packing Plant frozen meat from 1924.

    UNESCO's World Heritage Committee approved the inscription of four cultural sites on the World Heritage List: Fray Bentos Cultural-Industrial Landscape in Uruguay; Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining in Japan, Ephesus in Turkey and Aqueduct of Padre Tembleque Hydraulic System in Mexico. The Committee also approved the extension of Spain’s Routes of Santiago de Compostela with the addition of the “Camino Francés and Routes of Northern Spain”.
