    Chile in mourning after murder of 3 Carabineros officers

    Boric decreed three days of national mourning and pledged to capture those responsible

    Three non-commissioned officers of Chile's Carabineros Police were killed early Saturday in an ambush in the town of Cañete, near the city of Concepción, in the Bío Bío region some 500 kilometers south of Santiago. The crime, which is still under investigation, shocked the entire country. President Gabriel Boric Font promised it would not go unpunished and other officials even called for the reinstatement of the death penalty.

    The assessment of Chilean president Gabriel Boric' performance as registered by pollster Cadem shows that support for the head of state, following several weeks of stabilization, has again fallen four points and now stands at 33%.

    Boric wins runoff to become Chile's youngest ever President

    Boric, backed by a leftist coalition, brought more centrist advisers onto his team and promised that any changes would be gradual and fiscally responsible.

    Leftwing Deputy Gabriel Boric (35) beat first-round frontrunner Conservative José Antonio Kast in Sunday's presidential runoff to become Chile's youngest-ever head of state. After more than 90% of the votes were counted, Boric led by 56% against Kast's 44%.
