    Uruguay ratifies Inter-American Convention against All Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance

    Uruguay on Friday deposited at the headquarters of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington DC, the instrument of ratification of the Inter-American Convention against all Forms of Discrimination and Intolerance, becoming the first state to ratify it. Uruguay is also the only one that has ratified all the binding legal instruments of the inter-American system.

    “Involuntary exodus” is forcing 10% of Venezuelan population to abandon their country

    UNHCR already estimates that this year the figure could more than double, even surpassing 3 million people, 10 percent of the total Venezuelan population.

    The Organization of American States Secretary General Luis Almagro has sent a message to the Venezuelan people that are experiencing an involuntary exodus, forced upon them by the growing economic and institutional degradation of the country. By the end of this year it is estimated that over 10% of the Venezuela population will have left the country.

    OAS mission will observe the Mexican elections of July first

    Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray, emphasized that “the observation of the OAS will no doubt be a fundamental contribution to this electoral process.”

    The Organization of American States (OAS) and Mexico signed an agreement on the privileges and immunities of the Mission of Foreign Visitors that will observe the July first federal and local elections.

    Corruption and Venezuela in the agenda of a subdued Summit of the Americas

    “We should build a continent where citizens are first,” Peruvian president Vizcarra said. “We owe it to them. We owe it to their dreams.”

    Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra opened on Friday a subdued Summit of the Americas decrying widespread corruption and urging regional leaders to join forces in increasing transparency and boosting civil society. Addressing Western Hemisphere leaders in an auditorium where a number of seats were left notably empty, Peru's new president said that rather than accept corruption as a deep-seated scourge impossible to eliminate, governments should adopt concrete measures that prevent it from ever taking place.

    Only Venezuelan legislative has power to convene elections, argues OAS based on Venice Commission

    “Only the Venezuelan people have the power to convene elections for the National Constituent Assembly through referenda. The Executive does not have this power”.

    The office of OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro released a statement with comments from the European Council Venice Commission on the legality of the Venezuelan presidency decree which was used to convene elections for a constituent assembly to modify the country´s main law.

    Following through on its threat, Venezuela's government announced on Wednesday it is quitting the Organization of American States, accusing the regional body of meddling in its internal affairs over weeks of political unrest.
