  Brazil speeds trade agreement with Palestine in the framework of Mercosur

  

  This week Brazil deposited its instrument of ratification of the Free Trade Agreement between Mercosur and Palestine, which means the treaty is to come into force, between Brazil and the Palestine Administration, in thirty days. The instrument was deposited at last moment to Mercosur member Paraguay on July 3, when this country was still chair of the South American trade block. The information was released by the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Relations. The following day the rotating presidency of Mercosur was handed to Uruguay.

  Israel orders UNRWA out of East Jerusalem HQs

  

  The Government of Israel has ordered the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) to vacate its headquarters in East Jerusalem within 30 days. The measure was adopted at the request of the ultra-Orthodox Housing Minister Yitzhak Goldknopf. The Israeli Authority of Lands (ILA) claimed that UNRWA owed over 27 million shekels (around € 7 million) for operating on land belonging to Israel “without consent” over the past seven years.

  Lula says recognition of Palestine's statehood “a historic decision”

  

  Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said Wednesday's recognition of Palestine's statehood by Spain, Ireland, and Norway was a “historic decision,” Agencia Brasil reported Thursday. The South American leader also said that the measure will have a positive effect on efforts to find peace in the Middle East.

  Spain, Norway, and Ireland recognize Palestine's statehood

  

  Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez Wednesday announced that his country would be recognizing Palestine's statehood as of May 28. In addition to Spain, Norway and the Republic of Ireland will be adopting the same stance. It was the Socialist leader's second bold diplomatic move this week after pulling Madrid's Ambassador María Jesús Alonso Jiménez from Buenos Aires. Of the 193 United Nations member states, 143 have recognized an independent state of Palestine, including China and Russia.

  ICC Chief Prosecutor wants arrest warrants out on Israeli and Hamas leaders

  

  International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan announced Monday that he would be seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant as well as for Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Diab Ibrahim al-Masri, and Ismail Haniyeh.

  UN General Assembly okays Palestine's full membership but with no voting rights

  

  Despite Argentina's thumbs down together with eight other countries, the United Nations (UN) decided on Friday by 143 votes in favor and 25 abstentions to upgrade Palestine's status within the organization to that of a full membership, it was reported in New York. In 2012, Palestine had been admitted as an Observer State with 138 votes in and also 9 against.

  The United States exercised its veto power Thursday within the United Nations Security Council to cut Palestine short from full statehood and membership, it was reported in New York. Hence Palestine remained a “permanent observer state” with no voting rights within the global organization.

  Israel to ban Al Jazeera, PM announces

  

  Press freedom advocates worldwide expressed concern Monday after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would use newly passed temporary legislation to shut down the local operations of the Qatar-based Al Jazeera news service. The new law will only be in effect for 45 days and must be re-approved every 45 days, expiring on July 31. The judges have three days to decide whether to “amend” the decision or limit its duration.
