A roundtable on soccer organized by the Argentine Embassy in London in the wake of World Cup, Argentina Ambassador, Alicia Castro, highlighted the “cultural links between Argentine and British people” and said “soccer is one of the strongest”.

Uruguayan journalist Víctor Hugo Morales, former world cup champions Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa shared the panel -entitled “Argentina and England: History of a shared passion”- with English journalists Jim White, from The Daily Telegraph and Jimmy Burns, author of bestselling soccer books.

“There are many cultural links between Argentine and British people throughout history,” Ambassador Castro said. “Soccer is, without a doubt, one of the strongest”

Víctor Hugo Morales discussed the origins of soccer in Argentina and the decisive influence British immigrants had in it, while Ardiles and Vila shared stories of Argentina-England matches throughout the history of World Cups.

Burns and White, in turn, exchanged views on the role of soccer in British society and talked about the great expectations that come with every Argentina-England match.

The public at the Embassy recalled landmarks such as Diego Maradona’s goals against England in 1986 and the historic one scored by Ricardo Villa against Manchester City in 1981, considered in England as “the goal of the century”.

Diego Maradona's 'hand of god' rings a bell.

What is it about SA footballers - they have tremendous skill but can't resist cheating (or biting)

Ricardo Villa's goal against Manchester City in 1981, considered in England as “the goal of the century” - who by other than Spurs fans and RV himself?

    LOL!

It seems they all agree about the origins and influence of England on soccer in Argentina except TTT. Remember his rants?

There is just ONE link between argieland and the UK. 1982. The Falklands War. When the argies got taught respect for their betters. Such short memories. 32 years and they've “forgotten”. But WE rarely “start” things. WE have a long history of “finishing” them.

If it comes to it again, let's start by rolling out the rest of the Typhoons. Bringing the subs to within 500 miles. A single Typhoon can carry up to 39 ground attack Brimstone missiles. Other Typhoons could carry Maverick and Storm Shadow missiles. The subs could probably launch 140-150 Tomahawks.

Stick to the football field, argies, and try not to cheat again!
