European Parliament says González Urrutia is Venezuela's President-elect

The European Parliament Thursday recognized Unitarian Democratic Platform (PUD) candidate Edmundo González Urrutia as the legitimate winner of Venezuela's July 28 controversial presidential elections at which the incumbent Nicolás Maduro claims to have prevailed. Strasbourg reached this decision with 309 votes in favor, 201 against and 12 abstentions. Disenfranchised politician María Corina Machado has also been recognized as leader of the democratic forces in Venezuela.

Venezuela issues arrest warrants against Milei, his sister and Minister Bullrich

Venezuela's Public Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday the opening of an inquiry against Argentine President Javier Milei for alleged crimes against humanity and the “theft” of a Venezuelan state-owned airplane handed over to the United States. As a result, arrest warrants were issued against Milei, his sister and Presidential Secretary Karina Milei, and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich.

Blinken reiterates US support to Venezuelan opposition leaders

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken Tuesday held a telephone conversation with Venezuelan opposition leaders María Corina Machado -who stayed in the South American country- and former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia, who has sought asylum in Spain. The official from President Joseph Biden's administration insisted his country would “continue to defend the return to democratic freedoms” in Venezuela.

French nationals advised not to travel to Venezuela

French citizens have been urged to avoid all travel to Venezuela whenever possible after the arrest of three US nationals, two Spaniards and one Czech national said to be plotting to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro with the endorsement of the CIA.

Six arrested in Venezuela said to plan Maduro's murder

Venezuelan authorities arrested three Americans, two Spaniards, and one Czech national allegedly involved in a plot to kill President Nicolás Maduro, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced on nationwide TV this weekend saying the suspects belonged to a mission arranged by the CIA to overthrow the Bolivarian government. Cabello also showed footage of the guns seized from the would-be perpetrators.

Brazil still open to Venezuelan refugees, says Lula

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva insisted this week that his country would remain open to welcoming refugees from Venezuela, Agencia Brasil reported. The head of state made those remarks during a radio interview in Manaus. He also said he hoped the neighboring country would soon “return to normalcy.”

UK statement on Edmundo González Urrutia’s decision to leave Venezuela

“Edmundo Gonzalez’s decision to seek political asylum abroad follows months of repression and intimidation against opposition figures and civil society in Venezuela. It is a decision that no politician should ever have to make”, said Foreign Secretary David Lammy in a release from his Office.

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said in his weekly TV show Monday that he now respects former presidential candidate and retired diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia, who sought asylum in Spain after insisting he had won the July 28 elections, for which an arrest warrant had been issued against him.
