    Argentina exported 682,000 tons of beef last year, mostly to China

    China bought 73% of boneless meat and virtually all bone-in meat sold by Argentina last year

    Argentina is forecasted to increase 5,1% beef and calf production this year, reaching some 3,3 million tons with a domestic consumption of 2.43 million tons, according to the latest report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This follows on a record beef exports 2023, 682.000 tons, despite government measures and export levies aimed at curbing prices in the home market in an election year.

    Red Sea attacks force vessel with 16,000 live sheep and cattle to return to Australia

    Some 14,000 sheep and 2,000 cattle are stuck on board the MV Bahijah in temperatures close to 41C (104F) in Perth , according to farmers and export agents

    A ship carrying 16,000 sheep and cattle to Israel and that had been stranded off the coast of Australia in extreme heat conditions has returned to a Perth port. MV Bahijah abandoned its journey through the Red Sea - where Houthi fighters in Yemen have been attacking ships - leaving the animals stuck on board for weeks.

    First human case of equine encephalomyelitis in Uruguay

    The equine viral disease has expanded to most of the Uruguayan territory

    Uruguay's Public Health Ministry reported on Tuesday the first human-positive case of western equine encephalomyelitis, while the number of infected dead horses has reached 261 and the viral disease has now extended to eighteen of nineteen counties, according to the Agriculture and Livestock Ministry.

    Following on the Falkland Islands Natural Resources Department update on confirmed avian influenza (bird flu) case – Steeple Jason Island, northwest of the archipelago, it has been reported that Falklands Conservation carried out a surveillance visit in January 2024 and found dead albatross chicks in their thousands as well as low levels of rockhopper and skua mortalities. A further set of several more swabs were collected.

    Paraguay cleared to ship beef on the bone to Israel

    Sheep meat may too be exported soon to Israel, it was explained

    Paraguay has been authorized by Israel's Veterinary and Animal Health Service (IVSAH) to sell beef on the bone to that country, the National Animal Health and Quality Service (Senacsa) announced Sunday in Asunción. Uruguay Israel's approval on Jan. 8.

    Paraguay pork exports, including offal, reached 7,689 tons in 2023. This signifies a substantial increase of 541% compared to 2022, when only 1,184 tons were shipped.

    Following on the opening of the Taiwanese market for Paraguay pork exports, 2023 finished with a remarkable growth of 550%, over 2022, both in volume and value. Paraguay is one of the very few countries in the world that still has full diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, better known as Taiwan.

    Second victim dies of equine encephalitis in Argentina

    All 10 cases in the province of Buenos Aires required hospitalization, with only four of them discharged so far

    Health authorities in the Argentine province of Buenos Aires Thursday confirmed the first death due to Western equine encephalitis in the territory which was also the second nationwide. The victim was a 74-year-old woman with comorbidities from a semi-rural area. All 10 cases in the province -in General Viamonte, Junín, Leandro N. Alem, Arrecifes, Baradero, La Plata, Ramallo, Campana, and Bragado- required hospitalization, with only four of them discharged so far.
