A red alert has been declared in several parts of Ecuador hit by an unprecedented drought that resulted among other things in mass power cuts in a country already hit by spreading forest fires.

The cooperation consisted mainly of dropping firefighting boxes in the northern Paraguayan Chaco where over 180,000 hectares were engulfed by the flames.

Peru's National Civil Defense Institute (Indeci) said that the departments of Cuzco, Cajamarca, Huancavelica, and Huánuco were the worst affected areas.
