    Japan is promoting the sale of seafood in Brazil, where the largest overseas community of people of Japanese origin live, mainly in Sao Paulo. The event was held by Japan’s agriculture ministry in collaboration with other groups in Sao Paulo last week, and the goods showcased included Japanese marine products and sake.

    Argentina dispatches a research cruise on Patagonian toothfish

    The area under research is located between parallels 54 and 55 degrees South and Meridians 61 to 64, West.

    Argentina has launched a research cruise on Patagonian tooth fish (Dissostichus eleginoides) to collect more information on the reproduction physiology of the species. The fishing factory vessel San Arawa II left Ushuaia with a team of scientists from INIDEP, the Mar del Plata based Fisheries Research and Development Institute, and the cruise is expected to last some three weeks.

    Uruguay inaugurates fishing port terminal

    Uruguayan authorities inaugurated a new fishing port in Capurro on Tuesday after a US$ 110 million investment, an “important milestone” that will house the activity in Montevideo, President Luis Lacalle Pou explained. The head of state also pointed out that “it has been many years since a public port was built here.”

    Scottish company exploiting and abusing foreign mariners

    Workers were employed by TN Trawlers and its sister companies, owned by the Nicholson family, based in the town of Annan on the southern coast of Scotland.

    BBC is reporting that dozens of workers from around the world may have been trafficked into the UK to work for a small family-owned Scottish fishing firm. Thirty-five men from the Philippines, Ghana, India and Sri Lanka were recognized as victims of modern slavery by the Home Office after being referred to it between 2012 and 2020.

    Falklands cancels second season of Loligo squid for conservation reasons

    Despite the fishing industry agreeing with reasons not to open the second Loligo season, this will have a significant impact on the fishing sector

    In July 2024 the Falkland Islands Fisheries Department conducted a routine pre-season survey prior to the second Loligo season, working in close partnership with local fishing companies. The survey results showed the lowest second pre-season biomass estimate since 2008, with the lower end of the estimate being below the Fisheries Department safe stock replenishment threshold of 10,000 tonnes.

    Argos Georgia: bodies of six Galician mariners expected Monday in Spain

    The inquests into the deaths of six 6 crew members of the FV Argos Georgia was opened this week in the Falkland Islands Coroners Court, Malcolm Simmons. Those in attendance, both virtually and in person, included Nigel Phillips, Governor of St Helena, (since the vessel flew the Red Ensign of St Helena), representatives for the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Nick Hibberd from the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Rosario Bernal, Consul General of Spain in London, and next of kin for crew members.

    Falklands stands down on Argos Georgia missing crewmembers recovery

    Vessels travelling the datum area over the coming weeks are being encouraged to look out for any signs of those still missing or debris and report them to FIMA

    On Wednesday 31 July 2024, the Falkland Islands Government formally stood down the recovery efforts to locate the missing crew members following the loss of the fishing vessel Argos Georgia. This follows consideration of all circumstances and in line with all international requirements.

    MV Pharos SG and Argos Helena continued the search for disappeared crew members or debris during the weekend

    As part of the ongoing recovery effort for those crew members still missing from the fishing vessel Argos Georgia, over the weekend MV Pharos SG and one other vessel conducted a search of the datum area. This search unfortunately provided no further results of anyone missing or debris, points out the latest report from the Falkland Islands Government.
