Falklands, confirmed case of avian influenza in Surf Bay, close to Stanley

The Falkland Islands Director of Natural Resources has released the following, “On Monday 16 September 2024 swabs that were taken from a dead Gentoo penguin on Surf Bay were tested and returned positive for HPAI. Given that this is an isolated case of one single bird, that is more than 1km from poultry or a colony, a level 1 response will be followed and a full protection zone will not be declared.”

Falklands Tourist Board preparing for this summer's season

With the incoming cruise season round the corner the Falkland Islands Tourist Board is actively preparing for what is expected to be a very busy summer. With that in mind the Falklands Tourist Board is inviting any individuals and or businesses involved within the tourism industry to attend a pre-season meeting scheduled for this Wednesday at the Jetty Visitors Center, beginning at 17:00 hours.

Foreign travel to Peru surges in 2024

Foreign travelers visiting Peru went up by 39.2% between January and August 2024, according to a report released by Lima's Tourism Ministry during the weekend which analyzed National Superintendence of Migration data.

Aerolíneas Argentinas strike leaves 37,000 passengers stranded

Flag carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas had to cancel 319 flights Friday, altering the travel plans of some 37,000 passengers, as a result of a joint strike carried out by the airline industry labor groupings representing either pilots or crewmembers.

“Celebrity Ascent” inaugural cruise call to Gibraltar

Gibraltar Minister of Employment, Culture and Tourism, Christian Santos visited the Celebrity Ascent vessel on its inaugural cruise call to Gibraltar. Built in 2023, the Ascent is one of 17 ships in Celebrity’s fleet, accommodating 3.950 passengers and crew.

Punta Arenas and Ushuaia inaugurate cruise season 2024/25 next week

Punta Arenas and Ushuaia are ready for the start of the cruise season which in Chile is scheduled for Saturday 14th September and in Argentina, 17th September. In both cases it is a regional cruise with the “Ventus Australis” along the Chilean straits and channels, but there is great optimism that it could in effect 2024/25 could be a record season.

Falklands support for tourism sector affected by pathogenic avian influenza

Following the approval at ExCo on Tuesday 27 August 2024, the Falkland Islands Government are pleased to announce the continuation of the support scheme designed specifically to mitigate the effects of site closures associated with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, on tourism businesses, operators and employees until 2 April 2025.
