Falklands, confirmed case of avian influenza in Surf Bay, close to Stanley

The Falkland Islands Director of Natural Resources has released the following, “On Monday 16 September 2024 swabs that were taken from a dead Gentoo penguin on Surf Bay were tested and returned positive for HPAI. Given that this is an isolated case of one single bird, that is more than 1km from poultry or a colony, a level 1 response will be followed and a full protection zone will not be declared.”

Argentine grain exports have to be completed in the Atlantic because of insufficient draft along the Parana waterway

With the Parana crucial waterway again beginning to suffer the consequences of lack of a sufficient water level, making the loading of cereals and oil seeds at the main Argentine exporting port of Rosario, it is estimated that in the remaining months of the year, Bahía Blanca directly on the Atlantic will be receiving probably half a million tons of additional grains to dispatch.

Success of Falklands delegation two weeks visit of Uruguay

The Falkland Islands close relations and bonds with Uruguay were again confirmed this year by the delegation that spent a couple of weeks in the country visiting farms, agriculture research centres, plus promoting trade, tourism, science, education and the wonderful support from the British Hospital in Montevideo caring for our patients.

FAO August Food Price Index declined marginally, meat and cereals down, dairy and vegetable oil up

The benchmark for world food commodity prices declined marginally in August, as decreases in quotations for sugar, meat, and cereals outweighed increases in those for vegetable oils and dairy products, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported.

Falklands support for tourism sector affected by pathogenic avian influenza

Following the approval at ExCo on Tuesday 27 August 2024, the Falkland Islands Government are pleased to announce the continuation of the support scheme designed specifically to mitigate the effects of site closures associated with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, on tourism businesses, operators and employees until 2 April 2025.

Croatian vessel halts traffic for 12 hours through Paraná Waterwa

Trade sailing through the Paraná Waterway collapsed for 12 hours Saturday between San Nicolás and Ramallo when the Croatian-flagged bulk carrier AP Revelin ran aground, thus hindering traffic both ways as low water levels keep affecting business. In this scenario, several barges were advised not to set sail.

Explosive device goes off at Argentine Rural Society President's office

An explosive device went off Thursday at the headquarters of the Argentine Rural Society (SRA) in Buenos Aires. There were no fatalities but SRA President Santiago Pino's secretary and other people were reported to have been wounded.

Downspout affects Paraguayan foreign trade freight rates

Paraguayan import/export operations, which are heavily dependent on barge transport through the Paraná and Paraguay Rivers, saw costs go up 29.2% interannually in July as lower water levels limited both navigation and the amount of cargo each vessel can carry. In the third week of August, the Paraguay River was one centimeter above its historical minimum.

Uruguayan minister in Brazilian agro-show to promote dairy produce exports

“Uruguay is a net exporter of dairy produce and for years we have been a reliable, serious and main supplier for the Brazilian market. We can't be seen as predators or a threat for Brazil, we are a good trade partner in the framework of Mercosur,” Uruguayan Agriculture and Food minister Fernando Mattos told daily Correio do Povo, during his visit to Expointer, the largest agro show in the neighboring state of Rio Grande do Sul.
