Punta Arenas and Ushuaia inaugurate cruise season 2024/25 next week

Punta Arenas and Ushuaia are ready for the start of the cruise season which in Chile is scheduled for Saturday 14th September and in Argentina, 17th September. In both cases it is a regional cruise with the “Ventus Australis” along the Chilean straits and channels, but there is great optimism that it could in effect 2024/25 could be a record season.

Scientific research study on Avian Influenza Virus, HPAIV

Nature Communications has published and made public an extensive report with full results on field sampling and diagnosis of the deadly Bird Flu virus, high pathogenicity avian influenza virus (HPAIV), detected in the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, which apparently is rapidly spreading to sea birds and mammals species in sub-Antarctica islands and the frozen continent.

Punta Arenas expects some 170 cruise calls this season, beginning 14 September

Some 170 cruise calls and an estimated 100,000 visitors are what the Punta Arenas, Austral Ports Enterprise, Epaiustral, is expecting for the coming 2024/25 season. Of these 128 are internationally flagged vessels, while the remaining fifty belong to local Chilean cruise companies, the Ventus and the Stella Australis.

HMS Protector crosses Panama Canal as it prepares for Antarctica's 2024/25 season

The Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship HMS Protector is swapping the high north for the deepest south after completing a successful mission to Canada’s polar waters. The Plymouth-based survey and scientific vessel usually patrols the Antarctic, but occasionally to Arctic climates to certify that she is able to operate in the icy northern regions, which are vastly different to work in despite their visual similarities.

Argentina upgrades Petrel Antarctic base air and maritime facilities

The three services of the Argentine Armed Forces, together with private sector companies have finished upgrading landing facilities at the Antarctic base of Petrel in the Antarctic Peninsula. Accordingly during the month of June a first medium sized aircraft, Saab 340 from the Argentine Air Force landed successfully at the new landing strip.
