Unemployment keeps growing in Argentina

According to a report from Argentina's National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec), unemployment in the South American country reached 7.6 % in the second quarter of 2024. The figures were consistent with the 7.7% recorded in the previous trimester but represented a sharp interannual deterioration from the 6.2% during the same period of 2023.

Venezuela issues arrest warrants against Milei, his sister and Minister Bullrich

Venezuela's Public Prosecutor's Office announced Wednesday the opening of an inquiry against Argentine President Javier Milei for alleged crimes against humanity and the “theft” of a Venezuelan state-owned airplane handed over to the United States. As a result, arrest warrants were issued against Milei, his sister and Presidential Secretary Karina Milei, and Security Minister Patricia Bullrich.

Argentine grain exports have to be completed in the Atlantic because of insufficient draft along the Parana waterway

With the Parana crucial waterway again beginning to suffer the consequences of lack of a sufficient water level, making the loading of cereals and oil seeds at the main Argentine exporting port of Rosario, it is estimated that in the remaining months of the year, Bahía Blanca directly on the Atlantic will be receiving probably half a million tons of additional grains to dispatch.

Sturzenegger underlines new conditions for Aerolíneas Argentinas strikes

Argentine Deregulation Minister Federico Sturzenegger recalled that, as per President Javier Milei's Decree 831/24, the aviation industry had become a basic service and therefore the right to unrestricted strikes grounding all flights would no longer be possible. Sturzenegger made those remarks through his X account after last week's labor measure affecting over 37,000 travelers nationwide when Aerolíneas Argentinas pilots and crewmembers demanded wage updates to keep up with the country's rampant inflation.

New IMF chief negotiators leave Libertarian gov't reassessing the turf

After Thursday's announcement that International Monetary Fund (IMF) Western Hemisphere Director Rodrigo Valdés would no longer be handling the negoatiations between the global credit agency and the Government of Argentina, there were mixed feelings at Casa Rosada Friday. It was first a diplomatic victory for President Javier Milei, who had repeatedly spoken about Valdés' alleged animosity against Buenos Aires.

Argentine Navy pulls 1982 War sloop from auction for scraps

Argentina's Defense Ministry Wednesday announced it was pulling the the decommisioned sloop ARA Alférez Sobral from a list of old units to be auctioned for scraps, given the vessel's historic participation in the 1982 South Atlantic conflict over the Falkland Islands. The decision was adopted by Minister Luis Petri himself, it was explained through a statement. The ship is now expected to be turned into a museum.
