Brazil evaluating return to summer daylight saving time

Brazil's National Electric System Operator (ONS) suggested the federal government implement a summer daylight saving time scheme as part of its contingency plan, Agencia Brasil reported Thursday. The measure is now under evaluation with a decision due in the coming days, according to Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira, who also explained that even if adopted, it may not necessarily last the whole summer.

Brazilian central bank raises Selic rate to 10,75%, fearing inflation resurgence

While the United States Federal Reserve decided to cut its reference interest rate arguing inflation was under control, Brazil's Central Bank decided the opposite and actually hiked 25 bases point its already high Selic benchmark from 10,50% to 10,75%.

Lula insists Ukraine should seek a peaceful solution to war with Russia

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva insisted this week that his Ukrainian colleague Volodymyr Zelensky should take the South American country's advice and seek a peace negotiation with Moscow. Lula made those remarks after Zelensky dubbed the roadmap submitted jointly by Brasilia and Beijing “destructive.”

Brasilia's Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF1) Tuesday agreed to review an appeal filed by the legal team of one of the three defendants in the much-publicized 2022 murder of native-peoples activist Bruno Pereira and British journalist Dom Phillips in the Indigenous Land of Vale do Javari in the Amazon, Agencia Brasil reported.

Thousands protest in Rio against religious discrimination

Thousands paraded down Rio de Janeiro's iconic Copacabana Beach to raise their voices as cases of religious intolerance were reported to be on the rise. According to local media, the demonstrators stemmed from more than a dozen faiths, mainly Afro-Brazilian ones, that have come under attack from Christian groups. Newly chosen Human Rights Minister Macaé Evaristo joined the march.
