    Falklands New Power Station project in Stanley to begin, end of unplanned power cuts?

    The current Power Station is nearing the end of its life and the replacement has been a key priority for numerous Assemblies.

    Following approval at Executive Council on Tuesday 25 June, the Falkland Islands Government Public Works Department can now proceed with the final design and delivery program for the New Power Station in Stanley.

    The Israeli/US company preparing to extract oil from Falkland Islands waters, Navitas Petroleum Development and Production Ltd. (Navitas) has issued a revised Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) concerning its proposals for the drilling of oil wells and offshore production from the Sea Lion Field Northern Development Area, Phase 1 and 2, which includes additional information on atmospheric emissions.

    An international ban starting July first, on the use of Heavy Fuel Oil, HFO, in the Arctic region adopted by the United Nations maritime body, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), at the Marine Environment Protection Committee, in June 2021, has come into effect aiming to protect the vulnerable waters from the risk of oil spills.

    Despite being de-facto the new CEO of Brazil's state-run oil company Petrobras for a while, Magda Chambriard took her oath of office Wednesday during a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Agencia Brfasil reported. In her speech at the event attended among others by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Chambriard insisted that oil would lead the way into energy transition progressively reducing carbon emissions and zeroing them by 2050.
