    Falklands support for tourism sector affected by pathogenic avian influenza

    Given the importance of the tourist sector, the Falklands Government, where possible, will compensate for losses associated with HPAI-related restrictions

    Following the approval at ExCo on Tuesday 27 August 2024, the Falkland Islands Government are pleased to announce the continuation of the support scheme designed specifically to mitigate the effects of site closures associated with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, on tourism businesses, operators and employees until 2 April 2025.

    Falklands upgrades compensation for redundancy/unfair dismissal

    The Falkland Islands Executive Council (ExCo) agreed on Tuesday 23 April, legislation updates have been approved for the Employment Protection Ordinance, specifically on compensation for redundancy/unfair dismissal.

    Falkland Islands Government announces support scheme for tourist sector

    Following the approval at ExCo on Tuesday 12 December, the Falkland Islands Government will now be able to provide details on a support scheme designed specifically to mitigate the effects of site closures associated with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), also known as bird flu, on tourism businesses, operators and employees until 31 March 2024.

    Falklands looking for ways to overcome shortage of qualified and experienced labor

    “The Falkland Islands experience unique challenges when it comes to recruiting and retaining experienced workers.”

    The Falkland Islands Executive Council approved a Workforce Development Strategy for the Islands. This follows a public consultation on a draft Strategy undertaken earlier this year. The Falklands with a strong economy have been experiencing for years a shortage of qualified labor.

    Falklands Remembrance Sunday 12 November

     There will be two minutes silence at approximately 11.00 am marked by the firing of the saluting guns on Victory Green.

    Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands Legislative Assembly has made public the arrangements for Sunday 12 November 2023, Remembrance Sunday. The Annual Service of Remembrance, this year commemorating the 105th anniversary of the end of the First World War, will be held in Christ Church Cathedral commencing at 9.30 am.

    This Tuesday, 20 June two elected members from the Falkland Islands Assembly addressed the United Nations Special Committee on the situation with regard to the implementation of the declaration on the granting of independence to colonial countries and peoples, the so-called UN Committee of 24. The first to address the C24 was MLA Gavin Short, who criticized the aggressive attitude of Argentina towards the Falklands and mentioned several actions, which sought to undermine the Islands' economy.

    Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero is heading the delegation to the United Nations to participate at the Special Committee on Decolonization or C24, which will address the Argentine dispute with UK over the Falklands and other South Atlantic Islands and is hopeful of a resolution calling on both sides, Argentina and UK, to begin sovereignty negotiations over what is identified as the Malvinas Islands question.

    Falklands: PICTO 21 group told to expect no help from FIG or MLAs

    The so-called PICTO 21 group of Argentine visitors to the Falkland Islands looking for an accounting approach with which to measure ”the economic impact of the illegal occupation ... by the British government” will have no assistance from the local Legislative Assembly, it was announced.
