Aerolíneas Argentinas strike leaves 37,000 passengers stranded

Flag carrier Aerolíneas Argentinas had to cancel 319 flights Friday, altering the travel plans of some 37,000 passengers, as a result of a joint strike carried out by the airline industry labor groupings representing either pilots or crewmembers.

Colombia: Petro says there are plans to overthrow him in the next three months

Colombian President Gustavo Petro Thursday said an “imminent” coup d'état against him was in the making. He warned that his removal from office was to be carried out in the next three months and mentioned that large sums of money were involved in his intended removal from office.

Uruguay: Astesiano granted parole

Former Uruguayan Presidential Chief Bodyguard Alejandro Astesiano has been released from jail given his good behavior and other reasons that led Judge Noelia Gutierrez to understand that his social insertion was favorable. The Prosecutor's Office now has six days to appeal the measure.

Brazil still open to Venezuelan refugees, says Lula

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva insisted this week that his country would remain open to welcoming refugees from Venezuela, Agencia Brasil reported. The head of state made those remarks during a radio interview in Manaus. He also said he hoped the neighboring country would soon “return to normalcy.”

European Central Bank cuts basic interest rate 0.25 percentage points to 3,5%

While inflation in the Euro zone was down to 2,2% in August, and with sliding tendency, plus a lack of growth reaction from the economy, the European Central Bank, ECB, on Thursday decided to cut interest rates by another 0.25 percentage points to 3,5%.
