The inquests into the deaths of six 6 crew members of the FV Argos Georgia was opened this week in the Falkland Islands Coroners Court, Malcolm Simmons. Those in attendance, both virtually and in person, included Nigel Phillips, Governor of St Helena, (since the vessel flew the Red Ensign of St Helena), representatives for the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Nick Hibberd from the UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Rosario Bernal, Consul General of Spain in London, and next of kin for crew members.

Today 14th August the Falkland Islands are celebrating when 432 years ago in 1592, English explorer John Davis recorded the first sighting of the Falkland Islands from aboard the vessel “Desire”.

The Falkland Islands Government (FIG) has announced the termination of contractual negotiations with Harland and Wolff for the port replacement project. The decision was reached after an extraordinary Executive Council (ExCo) meeting on August 1, 2024.
On Sunday 4th August the Falkland Islands community came together in a moving memorial service for the crew of the lost Argos Georgia. The service was held at the Falkland Islands Defense Force Hall at 14:00 hours.

Falkland Islands Fire & Rescue Service's Chief Fire Officer Gardner Fiddes, who has been in the service for a total of 34 years (22 years of them being Chief Fire Officer) is retiring and in line with the department's ethos of career development within the service, Group Manager Gerard Jaffray will take up his new role as Chief Fire Officer for the service. Also within the service, Ian France will become the new Group Manager and Jeremy Clarke will become the new Watch Manager 'B' in their respective roles. A new Watch Manager 'A' role is still being sorted and will be announced in the near future.
On Wednesday 31 July 2024, the Falkland Islands Government formally stood down the recovery efforts to locate the missing crew members following the loss of the fishing vessel Argos Georgia. This follows consideration of all circumstances and in line with all international requirements.
Falklands Government House announced on Tuesday July 30 that the Deputy Director for the Overseas Territories Directorate of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, Adam Pile OBE, has been sworn in as the Acting Governor of the Falkland Islands and Acting Commissioner of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
