  BAS Professor Lloyd Peck awarded the 2024 SCAR Medal for Excellence in Antarctic Research

  

  Professor Lloyd Peck FRS, Science Leader and marine biologist at British Antarctic Survey, has been announced as the 2024 recipient of the SCAR Medal for Excellence in Antarctic Research. The medals, awarded by the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR), recognize exceptional service to the international Antarctic community and contributions to Antarctic and Southern Ocean research.

  Falklands longliner rescue operation: all crew members safe in located life rafts

  

  The Falkland Islands Maritime Authority reported early Tuesday morning that longliner Argos Georgia had been lost but fortunately, all 27 crew members were able to take to life rafts, and the rescue operation is now surface-centered in recovering the dispersed rafts in extreme weather conditions but with overwatch coverage.

  Whale environmentalist and crew arrested in Greenland on Japanese warrant

  

  The Greenland police reported it had arrested environmental activist Paul Watson when his ship docked in Nuuk under an international warrant issued by Japan. The 73-year-old Canadian-American citizen has been known for engaging in direct action tactics such as confrontations with whaling ships out at sea.

  Three icebergs sighted off Ushuaia

  

  Argentina's Coast Guard (Prefectura Naval Argentina - PNA) alerted all sailing ships this week of three icebergs near Ushuaia and advised them to avoid all unnecessary approaching these ice floes, of which only 10% is visible on the surface. The first detection was reported last Saturday by the Argentine-flagged fishing vessel Echizen Maru and the latest spotting came through on Monday at the Beagle Channel exit into the open sea.

  The tipping point that melts large ice sheets, findings by BAS scientists

  

  A new and worrying way that large ice sheets can melt has been characterized by scientists for the first time. The research focuses on how relatively warm seawater can lap at the underside of ground-based ice, which can accelerate the movement of the ice into the ocean.
